honō
_
Inspired from Japanese onsen, the concept for Honō was conceived in order to perfectly encapsulate the comforting experience of enjoying a natural hot spring bath.
The concept of Honō is inspired by coconuts that are crucial for the Hawaiians. The coconut tree is often lauded as “the tree of heaven” and “the staff of life”, two titles that are earned from a legend that tells of its role as a pathway to another world or bridge to the sacred land. Coconut trees as the pathway to heaven lie at the centre of Honō’s identity.
Aside from a shortened form of “Honolulu” - the capital of Hawaii - the name Honō is also taken from a Japanese word which means “flame”, alluding to the natural source of the hot spring bath. Hot spring bath or better known as onsen among the Japanese, makes an integral part in Japan’s culture and history. A visit to the onsen has been deemed a ritual and enjoyed as a short getaway where one may replenish the energy while socialising with others.
